Reanalysis of polytene chromosomes in Drosophila mojavensis populations from Santa Catalina Island , California

چکیده
It was previously reported that dietary restriction may disturb sex ratio (och Felix Zajitschek, 2012), as well as diet of females (Hu et al., 2012). Deviation from 1:1 sex ratio observed in our experiment was recorded only for flies maintained on carrot substrate after transferring to the new nutritional environments. Such sex ratio distortion may arise at least partially as a consequence of different sex-specific mortality in earlier developmental stages in flies maintained on carrot, i.e., one sex may be more sensitive to different nutritive conditions during development. This assumption should be further tested in the context of sexspecific nutritional requirements during development and adaptations to new nutritive environments. Microsatellite variation among diverging populations of Drosophila mojavensis.
Divergence and speciation may occur by various means, depending on the particular history, selective environments, and genetic composition of populations. In Drosophila mojavensis, a good model of incipient speciation, understanding the population genetic structure within this group facilitates our ability to understand the context in which reproductive isolation among populations is developing...
متن کاملSympatry, allopatry and sexual isolation between Drosophila mojavensis and D. arizonae.
Populations of the North American cactophilic fruitfly Drosophila mojavensis and its sibling species D. arizonae exist both in sympatry and in allopatry. Females of D. arizonae, regardless of their population of origin, are effectively completely isolated behaviorally from D. mojavensis males. On the other hand, females of D. mojavensis from the sympatric populations in Sonora, Mexico exhibit s...
متن کاملFlies across the water: genetic differentiation and reproductive isolation in allopatric desert Drosophila.
Between sister species of Drosophila, both pre- and postzygotic reproductive isolation commonly appear by the time a Nei's genetic distance of 0.5 is observed. The degree of genetic differentiation present when allopatric populations of the same Drosophila species exhibit incipient reproductive isolation has not been systematically investigated. Here we compare the relationship between genetic ...
متن کاملInhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase after 2-propanol exposure in different geographic races of Drosophila mojavensis: lack of evidence for selection at the Adh-2 locus.
High frequencies of the fast allele of alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (Adh-2F) are found in populations of Drosophila mojavensis that inhabit the Baja California peninsula (race BII) whereas the slow allele (Adh-2S) predominates at most other localities within the species' geographic range. Race BII flies utilize necrotic tissue of pitaya agria cactus (Stenocereus gummosus) which contains high levels ...
متن کاملPopulation genetic structure of the round stingray Urobatis halleri (Elasmobranchii: Rajiformes) in southern California and the Gulf of California.
The round stingray, Urobatis halleri, is a viviparous elasmobranch that inhabits inshore, benthic habitats ranging from the western U.S.A. to Panama. The population genetic structure of this species was inferred with seven polymorphic microsatellite loci in samples collected at three sites in coastal southern California, one near Santa Catalina Island, California and one in the eastern Gulf of ...
